“Jesus love Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” (John 11:5 NIV)
She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[a] Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:39-42 NIV)
How does Martha’s actions demonstrate duty? She has a strong drive for protocol, (doing what she thinks is right) or hospitality (welcoming). In contrast, Mary ignores the “dishes and such” and pays attention to Jesus.
Jesus’ words comforting Mary are very sweet. God has given us freedom. What a clear confidence of love.
Lord, help us to keep our priorities in order. We need to be focused upon You rather than the mission. Ministry has its place, but You are far more important. We openly confess that our time with You is often distracted. Jesus, You are the greatest teacher. We love You and our service duty is to You – not the mission. Help us to remember that. Amen!
