REFLECTION ON PSALM 99

Psalm 99 New International Version (NIV)

Psalm 99

The Lord reigns,
    let the nations tremble;
he sits enthroned between the cherubim,
    let the earth shake.
Great is the Lord in Zion;
    he is exalted over all the nations.
Let them praise your great and awesome name—
    he is holy.

The King is mighty, he loves justice—
    you have established equity;
in Jacob you have done
    what is just and right.
Exalt the Lord our God
    and worship at his footstool;
    he is holy.

Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
    Samuel was among those who called on his name;
they called on the Lord
    and he answered them.
He spoke to them from the pillar of cloud;
    they kept his statutes and the decrees he gave them.

Lord our God,
    you answered them;
you were to Israel a forgiving God,
    though you punished their misdeeds.[a]
Exalt the Lord our God
    and worship at his holy mountain,
    for the Lord our God is holy.

Perhaps no nation trembled before the Lord like Egypt. By the time the plagues were finished, they wanted Israel to take whatever they wanted and leave. No more frogs or flies – just go away! (Sounds like how we feel about the Corona virus).

By the time Israel reached Mount Sinai, the news of Egypt’s demise was well known. The surrounding kingdoms wondered if their gods were powerful enough to fight with a God of slaves who was stronger than any who protected Egypt. No nation, demon, or power can withstand our Holy LORD Almighty!

Moses and Aaron administered God’s perfect Holy Law before His beloved people. Although He loves justice and hates what sin has done, His loving forgiveness is always evident. The King’s wrath is only displayed when people reject, ignore, or fail to appreciate His authority.

Samuel represents the prophets in Psalm 99. They provide information whenever God’s people are in special need. Encouragement, correction, warning, and direction are all part of their assignments.

The beginning and ending of this song poetically connect in thought. We are reminded to worship the Almighty in humility and respect. His authority is unsurpassed. The images of a footstool, cherubim, and holy mountain provide insight into His heavenly throne room. In eternity, ALL injustice, including racial,  will be vanquished!
